Designed for the Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias, the Noticias Type System is a coherent set of typographic tools that solve any possible type-related problem. The system is divided in Noticias Serif, Noticias Sans, Noticias Micro and Noticias Symbols.
Noticias Serif is a friendly, expressive and characterful type family that never looses the utilitarian purpose it was designed for. With 3 optical sizes for improved text setting (Display, Title and Text), Noticias Serif presents a very eclectic vertical stress, with some touches of typographic inspiration, like the subtle curves on the vertical terminals and the overall soft approach, much more visible in the Extra version, specially designed for the main headlines. On the other hand, Noticias Sans is a hard working type family where neutrality and strength are the keywords. The basic family has 2 versions, a Normal and a Condensed, both with 3 weights, complemented with a very bold and dark Noticias Sans Extra, with 6 widths, ranging from Compact to Wide, to allow some bold titles to adapt horizontally to the page. Designed to be read and not to be seen, Noticias Micro was conceived for use at 5,5pt size and is the agate counterpart of the Noticias Type System. Noticias Micro is a family of 4 interchangeable weights, to avoid text to reflow, particularly useful of very complex tables and graphs. To complement the system we developed a special set of numerals and icons. With Noticias Symbols, we intended to draw very bold, wide, contrasted numerals, so they could stand out on the newspaper pages, while marking the rhythm of the reading process.
